In the bustling Maafannu, the western district of Male’ City, Maldives, is a small but charming niche, emanating aromas to melt the heart of the fussiest eater. Wooden doors open to the beaming faces and friendly welcomes of pleasant attendants.
Inside, you won’t be judged if you drool a little at what you see. Delicious looking home made goodies line heavenly displays shelves. A handful of little tables are comfortably set within the rustic architecture of the small cafe’. The interior is dotted with artsy bits of decor to complete the contemporary effect.
Meet Zeeba
Usually, you get greeted personally by the name behind the brand; Zeeba Saeed herself, who’s jovial charm makes you feel like you’ve come for a meal at a loving relative’s house. Zeeba is the culinary magic behind Zeeba’s Cafe’ & Deli.
Since her tender young years she had always been applauded by both friends and family for her culinary prowess. She cannot remember a time when she didn’t like cooking and baking. Growing up, her artistry in the kitchen became her favorite hobby. Always knowing that she would do something about her exceptional skills, Zeeba did not know when or how.
How It Began
Until years after; married to a loving husband and mother to an adorable boy, Zeeba was working as a reservations manager for one of the biggest names in Maldivian tourism. She finally decided it was time to choose a career more in line with her passion and natural talents. With a lot of support from family and friends, Zeeba embarked on the journey of her dreams at the age of 33. She invested all her savings into the little cafe’ that has since become a marvel of Male’ City.
Work / Life Balance
It was a risk unlike any she had ever taken before. Yet Zeeba knew with certainty that this was her calling in life. Her natural culinary talents combined with the cooking and baking techniques she had picked up through time, Zeeba was well equipped to take on this endeavor. It wasn’t easy, but working 16 to 18 hours a day for the first few months was a fun and exciting challenge for her.
However, being a family woman soon necessitated her to hire help to attain a healthy work/life balance. It was a good move as she was better able to focus on management once she got a team of young school leavers working for her.
Business Philosophy
Zeeba is always thankful for the immense support she receives from her husband, family and friends; a key ingredient to her success and drive. Her customer oriented approach allows for continual refinement of her original flavors and homemade product line through feedback. Her mission as well as her fulfillment comes from the big smiles on everyone who samples her creations. The fact that the cafe’ has never made a loss since its inception is further testament to Zeeba’s ability to manage resources.
Overcoming The Skeptics
During the startup, Zeeba also faced some skepticism regarding her product ideas and opening hours. While she is all for feedback, Zeeba knows when to cancel out the noise and grow her own ideas.
